Madeline Sherry
The major statement in this work is movement and energy .
In the abstract and figurative, the energy flows via paint and figures
although disguised within another form. It is sometimes called "Action
Painting" or "Abstract Expressionism."
Motivated by life experiences, imagery and dreams, I will find myself in
an unconscious state while laying the carefully mixed tones on my canvas.
For the most part I'm striving to control your per-view through the use of
color and form. Painting becomes an unconscious session where some of my
work unplanned emerges to my amazement.
One can see the influence of Michelangelo, Picasso, Kandinsky, De Kooning,
Beckman, Pop Music and Diagilev of The Ballets Russe..
Biography
Madeline Sherry was born in New York City.
As a young artist heading to a professional dance career until the age of 12
(seen as a primary force in the work), Madeline was recommended to the High
School of Performing Arts in New York City for outstanding accomplishments
in fine art.
Madeline began painting in oil in 1962 under Eugene Massin at the University
of Miami. Massin was a known expressionist painter in Coral Gables. One can
see the influence of Massin in the flow of paint and expressionist style in
her work.
In 1980, Madeline studied with Francoise Gilot at USC's Idyllwild School of
Music and the Arts (ISOMATA) and under Kim Macconnel, Ernie Silva and Faith
Ringgold. In 1994, she studied at Pratt Institute in New York.
Madeline Sherry now works downtown San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarters'
Brokers' Building: a community of serious artists proving to be a vital
working milieu.
